베이징올림픽 보다 세상을 바꾸기 위해 행동하는 당신이 필요해~
티벳 유혈사태와 위그루 자치구 폭탄테러, 미국인 관광객 피살 그리고 러시아-그루지야 전쟁....
개막식에 화려한 불꽃을 대량으로 하늘로 쏘아올린, 중국이 100년을 기다려왔다는 베이징올림픽은 개최 전부터 우여곡절이 많았다. 개막을 하고서도 대내외 악재들이 겹치고 겹쳐 올림픽다운 올림픽이라 할 수 없게 되었다.
특히 티벳인들의 평화시위와 독립요구를 무력으로 진압하고, 자국내 심각한 인권문제(소수민족, 정치범 탄압 등)를 해결할 노력도 하지 않는 중국 정부가 '전세계인들의 축제' '평화와 화합의 축제'라는 올림픽을 개최한다는 것에 전세계 많은 이들은 의문을 품고, 올림픽보다 티벳 평화를 외쳤다.

관련해 전세계인들의 다양한 언어로 '목소리'를 의미한다는 'AVAAZ(http://www.avaaz.org.)'라는 이름을 가진 국제적인 비영리 캠페인단체는 베이징올림픽보다 티벳의 독립과 중국 인권상황의 개선을 위해 전세계적인 캠페인(Shaking hands in Beijing!)을 온-오프라인에서 벌이고 있다.
런던, 리우데자네이루, 뉴욕, 파리, 워싱턴, 제네바 등에서 글로벌 팀을 운영하고 있는 AVAAZ는, 'Shaking hands in Beijing!' 캠페인을 런던에서 처음 시작했고 현재 수많은 사람들이 전세계 곳곳에서 손에 손을 잡으며 신나게 이 캠페인에 동참하고 있다.(아래 동영상 참조)
캠페인에 참여하는 방법도 너무 쉽다.
우선 AVAAZ 홈페이지(http://www.avaaz.org/en/handshake ) 에서 캠페인(서명) 취지를 읽고(영문), 공감한다면 자신의 이메일과 이름 등을 빈칸에 채우면 된다. 서명을 하게 되면 전세계에서 누가 이 캠페인에 참여했는지도 알 수 있고, 자신이 캠페인에 참여했다는 것도 움직이는 지구를 통해 볼 수 있다.
이후에는 AVAAZ가 벌이는 전세계적인 캠페인 활동에 대한 소식도 이메일로 받아 볼 수 있다. 현재 온라인 캠페인에 116,977명이 참여했다. 그리고 당근 자신도 캠페인 소식을 접하자 마자, 서명을 했다.

As the Beijing Olympics begin, the world looks on with mixed emotions. It's a moment which should bring us closer together, and Chinese citizens deserve their excitement -- but the Chinese government still hasn't opened meaningful dialogue with the Dalai Lama, or changed its stance on Burma, Darfur and other pressing issues.
Even worse, extremists in China are promoting the view that Olympic activism like ours is anti-Chinese. We can't stay silent, but we also can't let our efforts be abused to divide people. So what can we do? The answer comes from the Dalai Lama himself, in an unambiguous gesture of Olympic spirit and friendship: a handshake.
It began in London, passed hand to hand by thousands of us -- now the handshake has gone online, and is criss-crossing the globe on its way to Beijing. All of us can join, Chinese and non-Chinese, and it comes with a promise: to hold ALL our governments accountable where they fall short, in Tibet, Iraq, Burma or beyond. The worldwide outcry has produced a little progress, but much resistance from Chinese officials so far. If we are to see advances not setbacks after the Games, we need to show both that our voices will never fall silent, and that our challenge is a positive one.
We have one last chance to reclaim the spirit of the Olympics, with the message of friendship and dialogue we share with the Dalai Lama. The more people join the global handshake, the more powerful our message will be when it hits the Chinese and international media. So let's forward this email on, encouraging everyone to join in.
